    COUNTERFEITING: UPDATED OECD AND EUIPO DATA<\/b><\/p>

    The report , “Mapping Global Trade in<\/b> Fakes<\/b> 2025 – Global Trends and Enforcement Challenges,”<\/b> prepared by OECD and EUIPO<\/b>, provides up-to-date analysis on customs seizures<\/b> and emerging trends<\/b> related to counterfeiting<\/b>. The paper stresses the urgency of stronger international cooperation<\/b> to safeguard intellectual property<\/b> rights and counter unfair competition<\/b>.<\/p>

    Specifically, the report confirms that:<\/p>

    • Counterfeit products<\/b> infiltrate supply networks, harming legitimate businesses<\/b>, reducing tax revenues<\/b> and posing risks to public health and safety.<\/b><\/li>
    • Illicit trade is closely linked to organized crime<\/b> and corruption<\/b>.<\/li>
    • The hardest hit sectors are clothing, footwear and electronics<\/b>.<\/li>
    • China<\/b> remains the main country of origin, followed by Bangladesh, Lebanon, Syria and Turkey<\/b>.<\/li><\/ul>

      THE NEW ROUTES AND STRATEGIES OF COUNTERFEITERS<\/b><\/p>

      Counterfeiters are altering trade routes<\/b> by exploiting international routes such as the Danube<\/b> River and locating production in areas closer to end markets to evade customs controls<\/b>.<\/p>

      One of the most commonly used techniques is to import disassembled components<\/b> or separate packaging<\/b>, which are then assembled in the target market.<\/p>

      In addition, trade has shifted to online platforms<\/b>, with heavy use of postal services<\/b> as a distribution channel. This allows shipments to be classified as “de minimis<\/b>” and escape inspection: in fact, 79 percent of seizures in 2020-21<\/b> involve shipments with fewer than 10 items.<\/p>

      <\/p>

      CONSEQUENCES AND RECOMMENDATIONS<\/b><\/p>

      Some categories that are particularly dangerous to health and safety<\/b>, such as drugs, cosmetics and toys<\/b>, emerge among the counterfeit products. This element is crucial for establishing effective prevention strategies<\/b>.<\/p>

      Economically, in 2021 the value of world trade in counterfeit goods<\/b> accounted for 2.3 percent of global imports<\/b>, while in the EU<\/b> the estimate rises to 4.7 percent of the total<\/b>. This makes theEuropean Union<\/b> a central target for illicit imports.<\/p>

      To strengthen enforcement against counterfeiting and unfair competition<\/b>, it is necessary:<\/p>

      • Improving coordination among authorities<\/b><\/li>
      • Encouraging information sharing<\/b><\/li>
      • Strengthen collaboration with intellectual property rights holders<\/b><\/li>
